Carrying Each Other’s Burdens
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28 NLT
Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2
Several years ago, I went hiking with a close friend who was still adjusting to the demands of higher elevations. It was only her second summer living and hiking in such conditions, so climbing uphill for long stretches was a significant challenge. We set out for a pair of mountain lakes in the northern Sierras, and as we climbed a long exposed slope, she began to lag behind, feeling increasingly exhausted. I knew that we were within a quarter mile of our destination, with sparkling lake waters beckoning for a swim. I also knew that she was ready to give up. I offered to carry her daypack in addition to my own, and though she initially protested, she eventually agreed, recognizing that we would both benefit from a cooling dip.
God expects us to help others as he has helped us. By sharing His love and helping those in need, we grow to be more like Christ. Sometimes it might be listening to a family member or friend who needs to talk to someone while dealing with stress from a relationship, health challenge, or job difficulties. Other times, it might involve preparing a meal or lending a hand to someone recovering from illness or surgery. Then again, taking someone out for a coffee, dinner, or a movie when they are between jobs can lift their spirits and make them feel valued and cared for. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference to ease someone’s burden.
When we reach out to help others, God honors our efforts to model Him by blessing us with the joy that comes from making a difference in someone else’s life. On that day of hiking to the lake, it was so fulfilling to see my friend smile and laugh as we took a refreshing dip in a mountain lake. I left the lake feeling refreshed both physically and spiritually. What a joy it is when we obey God in lovingly supporting others with compassion.
