The sun is setting on summer…

When summer opens, I see how fast it matures and fear it will be short; but after the heats of July and August, I am reconciled, like one who has had his swing, to the cool or autumn.

In just a few short days, August will be a memory and September will be here!  Oh, there will still be some hot days lingering on into September but nights will become cooler and days will become shorter. There’s a feel of uncertain pause in the atmosphere, rather like the moment just as one prepares to dive off a diving board. A delicious but sometimes poignant sense at the ending of summer which is always a little bittersweet.

Though autumn is absolutely my favorite season with its cool nights, pleasant days, and bright colors…there’s also a little melancholy at the thought of summer fun slipping away for the year. Few paddleboarding and swimming days at mountain lakes are left. Soon, mornings and evenings will be too cool to comfortably sit outside without a jacket. The garden will experience a glorious burst of harvest time, but then frost will end the deliciousness of fresh picked vegetables and fruits until next year. 

On the flip side, the changing of the seasons brings good things too such a cessation of the hot sweltering days of summer and the necessity to get up super early to walk my pup. The cooler days will make it more inviting to hike in the mountains. The colder nights will make it much easier to sleep well. The colors of fall in autumn will be some of nature’s best artistry!

So, it’s with mixed feelings that I bid adieu to August and the summer months. Good memories were made, but autumn will bring a whole host of opportunities to create wonderful fall memories!   But more on that…in September!
