Remembering…
I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
I will consider all your works
and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”
Psalm 77:11-12
Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.
Oscar Wilde
Several years ago, an aggressive wildfire fueled by mighty winds was threatening my neighborhood; I thought that there might be a need to evacuate. At that time, I made a list and gathered together a number of items that I would take with me. These were items that were either logistical support or precious to me for various reasons. As with most people, the first “non-essential” that came to mind were photos. Years of memories preserved in paper photographs, if burned, they would be lost forever. Why is it that our photos are so important to us? I believe that the answer is in the psalm above.
You see, our photos often capture special memories of people, places, and times where God’s goodness was abundantly apparent. Those images are reminders of how He has worked in our lives. Times with family, usually those who know and love us best and longest, reflecting many changes over the years. Images of friendships which endured throughout our lives or may have just blessed our lives for a season. Places that echo with the laughter, joy, and sadness of loved ones. Settings where God’s glory shone through the majesty of snowcapped peaks or an ocean sunset. Photographs help us to cherish and reflect on all of God’s goodness and presence in our lives.
