National Dessert Day

All people with healthy physical appetites have a sweet tooth somewhere in their heads.

Macmillan’s Magazine, 1887

If you find honey, eat just enough---too much of it, and you will vomit.

Proverbs 25:16 (ICB)

What a sweet day!  Encouragement to enjoy treats…not that I confine them to a special day!  So many delicious things to enjoy from cakes to pies to cookies to cobblers. The possibilities are endless!

For much of my life, I would enjoy a luscious dessert, then go for seconds (or thirds). After all, if it tasted good the first time, then more must be even better!  As I’ve gotten older, I realize that you CAN have too much of a good thing. If I eat too many sweets at once, I almost always regret it. Not only might I feel physically yucky from sugar overload, but the sure knowledge that I’ve eaten three or four days worth of calories in one sitting makes me feel terrible about my lack of self-control.  A weigh-in the next morning is sure to confirm that my temporary food insanity had negative consequences.

So, nowadays, I try to nibble on dessert in order to savor every bite.  Because sweet treats are lovely and fine if in moderation; it’s really all about restraint and appreciation of taste. And if I occasionally eat a little more, or even the rare “pig out”, I let go the guilt and resume healthy eating again.

Meanwhile, I plan on savoring a warm snickerdoodle cookie this evening…

May you also savor a sweet treat on National Dessert Day!
