Happy Thanksgiving!

I thank my God every time I remember you.

Philippians 1:3

Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.

Charles Dickens

Forever on Thanksgiving, the heart will find the pathway home.

Wilbur D. Nesbit

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.  It’s a sweet end to autumn, my favorite season of the year, but it also officially starts the Christmas season, another special period.  It’s a time of reflection and gathering of loved ones, family and/or friends.  The familiar traditions tie us together and the memories of past Thanksgivings bond our hearts.  Like mashed potatoes mixed with cream and butter, Thanksgiving is a wonderful blend of nostalgic memories and the joyful present.

Though the Scripture reflects Paul writing to the church in Philippi about his gladness of those serving in the church, his words should be on our hearts every Thanksgiving as we think of all those who have made a difference in our lives, whether that person is still with us or not.  The memories should be as sweet as pumpkin pie, but the joy of today as bright as a glass of sparkling cider. The legacy of Thanksgiving should be to pass along a recipe for love that will create memories, be enjoyed in the present, and leave a roadmap to joy for future generations.
