Early summer morning musings…

When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive — to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.

Marcus Aurelius

[Lord] Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning,
    for I am trusting you.
Show me where to walk,
for I give myself to you. Psalm 143:8 NLT

If you read the blog last month, you know that there has been a robin consistently waking me up around 4:30 to 5:00 am. I have to share that he is now generally delaying the start of his morning musical program until around 5:15 or so, he is not singing as loudly or as long, and he’s not quite as loud (for me) as he is usually a few houses down rather than in my backyard.  So, you would think that I could sleep in a bit more. Silly me! Why do I always forget that the light wakes me up early in summer?  There’s no sleeping in during June through August. Even if I could manage to sleep through the light (room darkening shades don’t do the trick for me), I would be woken up by the guilt to get out and walk my dog before it’s too hot to do so.

On a positive note, early summer mornings are magical. The air is coolish just before the sun rises above the mountain horizon line. Then there’s a period where it’s not too warm as the sun casts a golden light, blocked only by long slanting shadows. The birds are all out to enjoy the morning before the stifling heat to come, and the walking paths hold a smattering of cheerful early morning risers, especially other dog walkers! Yes, summer mornings are the best time of day on a hot summer day, so I’m glad not to miss that time (even if I don’t always feel like rolling out of bed pre-dawn!).

May you enjoy a summer early morning walk this week…maybe even followed by sitting in a shady garden sipping a delightful iced coffee!
