Cloud Art

Nature is a mutable cloud, which is always and never the same.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

He (God) covers the face of the full moon, spreading his clouds over it. Job 26:9 NIV

We seem to live such busy lives these days, yet some of the simplest things can bring joy to a child (or adult) and spark imagination. Do you remember stretching out on a cool green summer lawn, or maybe a towel by a poolside, and looking up into a perfect blue sky with scattered puffy white clouds? Looking at the cloud shapes and trading ideas with friends about animals or other things that the clouds resembled?

Sometimes, on walks, I still find my imagination sparked by the bright white and unusual shapes of summer cumulous or cumulonimbus clouds. In fact, I sometimes see an isolated patch of blue surrounded by clouds and find myself considering the shape of the blue sky patch.

Such a simple activity to bring a smile, yet it can be done anywhere on earth. It costs nothing, but a few moments of summertime fancy. So, if you’re a parent or grandparent (or eternally young at heart) share a special moment with a child this summer. Grab an ice cream bar or popsicle (sure way to get kid buy-in for this “old-fashioned” summer activity). Stretch out on the grass or lean against a tree and have fun with imaginative cloud art!
