Clinginess…
I cling to you (God); your right hand upholds me.
Psalm 63:8 NIV
The ultimate perfection of the human soul consists in clinging to God. Thomas Aquinas
As I was walking the other day, I saw a Virginia Creeper vine and thought about how vines live by clinging to things. It got me to thinking that people do the same…. At different points in our lives, we cling to our parents (and sometimes siblings), a spouse, our children (no matter their age), friends, and fur family. In addition, we cling to our homes, yards, mementos, etc. Sometimes we cling to the past or cling to future plans. We are a clingy people!
While all those things above may be good things to hold on to, the one sure support is our eternal, loving God. All other things are temporal. People and pets will not be forever in our lives on earth. Memories fade. The future is unsure. But God is always with us in our lives. In the good that He provides, He is cheering us on and celebrating with us. In the challenges that this fallen world causes, He is there with loving comfort. In the hard seasons of life, He provides us strength. In the tranquil periods of life, He is giving us inner and outer peace.
So I do urge you to hold close those you love and ideas that you cherish because earthly life is short and uncertain. Yet I also urge you to cling to our loving Creator, the One who made you and loves you with a love that is so all encompassing that it is beyond our full understanding. Cling to the Divine…
